Ok loyal Legion of Fan, I know I watch a lot of dumb movies, but I had no idea what I was getting into when I decided to go see “Legion” the other day.
Brace yourselves, I’m about to show you everything you need to know about “Legion”:
There. You have now seen everything cool that “Legion” has to offer.
Seriously, there is absolutely no substance to this movie. I wasn’t expecting a deep plot or serious acting, but I certainly wasn’t expecting the stupidity of Bob (Dennis Quaid, GI Joe, Pandorum) and his half retard son named Jeep (Lucas Black, Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift) taking care of some bitch named Charlie (Adrianne Palicki) who is the most unlikeable heroine I’ve ever seen in a movie to date.
Here’s the gist, God is angry at humanity and orders Michael and Gabriel to carry out an extermination. Michael rebels and finds “the only hope” humanity has, the unborn child being carried by Charlie. Why is this child so important? Because the script says so. That’s really all there is to this movie. A series of cliched lines set around a typical apocalypse plot, and stereotyped cast. When I say everything you need to know is in the trailer, it’s completely true, and I don’t feel that I’m spoiling anything by telling you that the child is important only because the script says it is. There’s no prophecy about her child being important, it’s not the unborn Christ or even an Anti-Christ type twist. It’s just important, and poorly explained.
The only saving grace of this movie is Paul Bettany and Kevin Durand, the only two actors who seemed to take this movie anywhere close to serious. I rarely do this but in a Dave like action I’m thinking of banning any movie with Dennis Quaid in it from reviews from now on.
This movie fails on so many levels it’s not even funny. It even fails at being funny when it tries to be.
If you still want to see the movie after reading this review, then be prepared for a poorly written, poorly directed, disjointed stereotypical story with predictable ending after predictable twist. Too long, and too boring. I know it’s still pretty early in the year but I’m going to stand by and say that Legion is the dumbest movie of 2010.
I saw Anvil!: The Story of Anvil the other day on DVD. This movie has been getting a lot of good critical buzz this year but it was their appearance on Conan O’Brian that motivated me to check out the movie. A:tSoA is a documentary abou the band Anvil – a heavy metal hair band from the early 1980s who helped invent the heavy metal sound and toured with all sorts of bands that all made it big. Despite those credentials, Anvil never took off. They never achieved more than very limited commercial success but they also never broke up and have been performing and recording continuously for almost 30 years, still looking for their big break.
The documentary follows the band as they experience a disastrous tour of Europe and attempt to record and sell their 13th album. In many ways the film is a straight forward rockumentary and features a lot of what you’d expect. Don’t let that immediate appearance fool you A:tSoA is not a typical rockumentary. The two primary members of the band Steve “Lips” Kudlow – the lead singer and Robb Reiner -the drummer are utterly personable and relatable. The interviews are genuine and intimate. These men share their dreams and talk about the stumbling blocks they have encountered through the years. What really sets them apart is the unabashedly hopeful they remain, almost to the point complete self-delusion. These men continue to take on great cost to themselves financially and personally to keep this band alive in constant hope for their next big break.
I highly recommend this movie to anyone interested in an emotional narrative about failure and perseverance. The movie will especially resonate with rock enthusiasts and with anyone who has ever pursued a dream that everyone thought was nuts.
Anvil!: The Story of Anvil (2009) : directed by Sacha Gervasi, starring: The band Anvil, their families and features members of other heavy metal bands.

This week we decided to review Astro Boy and Dirty Work instead of Where The Wild Things are.
I know, we keep on not reviewing the movie picks we say we are, but our schedules keeps on getting messed up, and in an attempt to keep the movies reviewed down to at least the weekend they’re out, we’re going to change things up a bit. So for now, we’re only going to flip over the DvD pick, and the theater pick will be one of the new releases that weekend that we were able to make it to.
So this time we saw the new Astro Boy movie, and we have some corrections to make. Dave and Mikey stated that they thought that the original Astro Boy started some time in the 70s, however it turns out that his original appearance was in 1951, and his show first aired in 1963.
Here’s a link to the Wikipedia article on Astro Boy, and his creator Dr. Osamu Tezuka.
We’re going to try in the future to do more research on our movies to prevent further mistakes like this from happening. This podcast is an ever growing process, and we’re happy that you are all here to be a part of it.
As always, thanks for tuning in, and thanks for remaining in the Legion.
